SYMPTOMS OF A MIGRAINE HEADACHE

Migraine headaches can cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation, usually on just one side of the head. It’s often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.

Migraine attacks can cause significant pain for hours to days and can be so severe that the pain is disabling.

Symptoms you may be experiencing include:

 

  • Visual phenomena, such as seeing various shapes, bright spots or flashes of light
  • Vision loss
  • Pins and needles sensations in an arm or leg
  • Weakness or numbness in the face or one side of the body
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Hearing noises or music
  • Uncontrollable jerking or other movements
  • Pain on one side or both sides of your head
  • Pain that feels throbbing or pulsing
  • Sensitivity to light, sounds, and sometimes smells and touch
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Lightheadedness, sometimes followed by fainting

DIAGNOSING THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF YOUR MIGRAINE HEADACHES

When you arrive at Harborside Spine and Sports Center to deterimine the cause of your migraine headaches, our priority will be to figure out the root of the problem. We want to achieve the correct diagnosis right away, integrating a comprehensive history and hands-on exam along with state-of-the-art imaging, so we can provide you with the most efficient treatment options.

To begin, we’ll talk to you about your symptoms, which will provide us with critical information about your underlying condition. We will then perform a physical and neurologial exam, which may lead us to administer or order one of the following; blood tests, MRI, CT scan or spinal tap. When we determine the underlying cause, an effective treatment plan will be put in place to give you a better quality of life.

Indication BOTOX® is a prescription medicine that is injected to prevent headaches in adults with chronic migraine who have 15 or more days each month with headache lasting 4 or more hours each day in people 18 years or older.

It is not known whether BOTOX® is safe or effective to prevent headaches in patients with migraine who have 14 or fewer headache days each month (episodic migraine).

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION BOTOX® may cause serious side effects that can be life threatening. Get medical help right away if you have any of these problems any time (hours to weeks) after injection of BOTOX®:

  • Problems swallowing, speaking, or breathing, due to weakening of associated muscles, can be severe and result in loss of life. You are at the highest risk if these problems are pre-existing before injection. Swallowing problems may last for several months.
  • Spread of toxin effects. The effect of botulinum toxin may affect areas away from the injection site and cause serious symptoms including: loss of strength and all-over muscle weakness, double vision, blurred vision and drooping eyelids, hoarseness or change or loss of voice, trouble saying words clearly, loss of bladder control, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing.
